semester kick-off lockdown

I like the sequential order of the Virginia Tech headlines for today. “First day of a promising future for Virginia Tech’s Class of 2010…” and then “University to cancel remaining classes”.

This goes back to about when I was a freshman here, but there is currently a manhunt for a one Will who killed a security guard while being transfered from jail to the hospital and then killed a deputy this morning. I say it goes back, because Will used to be a regular of Bollo’s and roomed with an employee (though, he sometimes didn’t pay rent, so he wasn’t exactly a preferred customer). I was interviewed by the Roanoke Times yesterday while I was working at Bollo’s, although I couldn’t provide much information about him, apart from that I would always see him there in my freshmen and sophomore years. He also talked a lot, often getting argumentative on topics related to miner’s rights. I just now remembered that - maybe I should have mentioned it to the RTimes lady.

Anyways. I guess this means another day without mail or Huckleberry trail potential. I can always stay in my room and study. Which. acually is. what I will do.

I just woke up (ya know, Pacific time now), turned on the tube, and a map with Blacksburg highlighted was up on the screen. Never a dull moment in Virginia…

  2. Jeremiah Says:

FOX News is interviewing a senior named Matt on the phone right now. He hasn’t said anything intelligible.

A girl called her mom this morning around 9am telling her mom that she thought she saw Will in Squires Student Center. The mom then called her local police saying that her daughter was taken hostage in Squires.

Pretty much, it just sucked a lot of the law/SWAT resources from legitimate tips entirely towards campus and there was quite a big commotion about it.

  4. One of your parents Says:

Glad to know you are OK after learning about the situation on campus.

People are rather relaxed around here. I was trying to do some reading but kept falling asleep to the dull hum of fans. Every now and then a police/rescue squad siren goes off, but that is actually commonplace on a typical day.

  6. Ryan Says:

Right before my last comment, the police/SWAT forces caught Will in the middle of a residential area. FYI. The Roanoke Times link has been updating as soon as they receive information.

I heard about this on the radio today and was curious as to your take on the situation. Glad to hear that it’s been resolved. Nothing like a little excitement to kick off the semester, huh?

Well. at least ya’ll got a little bit of national attention down there in Blacksburg. Le tout Virginia Tech must be galvanized by this topic. Police snipers on the roof? Whoa!

Bollo’s must be overrun now by newly freed students anxious to discuss the latest development over their lattes.

Enjoy it while you can, folks! It’s back to reality tomorrow.

  9. Tom Says:

You should have made things up about him, you could have been on the TV screen!

Anyhow, I did see an interview with a couple of male students on CNN this morning, one of whom used the word ‘like’ 4 times during his two-sentence sound bite. It was, like, embarrassing.
