The Logitech X-230s look nice for the price, which is frankly the most important facet of my speaker purchase. Since this isn't a full audio theater replacement, I can slack on the quality side to a degree, as long as I am still satiated with good results and laudable value. In a perfect world, apart from World Peace, I would be hauling around my !JBL Studio set up everywhere I go; but due to inconvenience and spatial limitations, I can settle for something nearly as good - even if it costs one-tenth of the real-Studio-thing. (So, maybe the X-230s).

I'd say take a look at the Logitech X230s (NewEgg has them for $33)

I have their 5.1 cousins (the X530) that I lucked into getting for $37.00 (sale + coupon + free shipping). They sound marvelous. Even listening to a 1920s 78rpm victrola disc on a turntable with a bum preamp. If the 2.1s are anything like the 5.1s, I'd bank on them. Plus the speaker stands swivel and are easily mountable to lofts with zip ties.

My only qualms are that the speaker with the controls on it connects to the subwoofer via a fixed-length 15-pin (VGA) connector, so location is key, and the level knob on the sub is a bit easy to turn, so I'd recommend butting it up against a wall (and not using it as a footrest).

Will recommend the Klipsch 2.1 system. Takes up a bit more space due to the massive woofer/amp cabinet, but doesn't sound bad.
