is there a care-free?
Sunday, May 1st, 2005It would be a dastardly lie to say I made a trip to Virginia Tech this weekend just so I could take in the wonder that is Tiger. While the OS release date was conveniently also this past Friday, this weekend was my true, ultimate last chance to visit VT this semester. In essence, this becomes a farewell to several people I have befriended and who were kind of heart enough to do the same to me.
Friday night provided a small group of us with Thai food - Thai food that Junko missed out on, and she was most displeased for the lack of invitation. There are endless conciliations on our part for not informing Junko of a meal of spicy food and we will NEVER DO IT AGAIN. Promise. But the meal was great and listening to the new Fischerspooner album on the way over was fantastic. I’ve discovered that the best way to start out a Friday night is to spend it with four other people in a TDI Jetta listening to Fischerspooner. Try it some time and you’ll thank me later.
Each of my stays at Blacksburg this semester have been great, but have usually been distraught with uncomplimentary weather. This weekend was absolutely different. Saturday wasn’t wonderful, but provided amazing weather for walking around campus - something I did a fair amount of. Abigail and I also sat down for some espresso at The Enemy and a time of catching up. Nothing better than espresso, conversation, and a shower of rain in the background - grande. The skies pulled back their fountains and I spent much of that evening walking around Blacksburg with Laken until Derek finished a recording session, at which point we all sat down for some dinner. I could never emphasize enough how much I prefer conversation with friends over any thing in the world.
Before I knew any better, deja vu I can feel, it was Sunday brunch and I was making my drive back to Lynchburg. Sure the Tiger release event was fun and I thoroughly succeeded in geeking out, but I would trade that a thousand times over for the short, bittersweet hours I spent with friends this weekend.
Once again, Derek was gracious enough to house me for my extent of stay. He is planning on embarking for NYC not long after graduation, so he is quickly added to the list of graduating farewells I had to make. Junko too. And there were others that I wasn’t as fortunate to meet up with despite their imminent departure. Very much in accord with a C2 commercial released in 2004, “you can’t always get what you want”. As a side note: I always found that advertisement ironic - is C2 a let-down on taste while nicely compromising on caloric content? Anyways.
Fabulous weekend, old sport. Each of You made it perfectly consummate.
