reluctant in training

Sometimes I covet those who have a wealth of free-time here around campus, i.e. those with going-nowhere majors or the minimum 12 credits (granted those 12 credits aren’t independent research credits). Right now my situation with school is reaching quite a climax. I recall last year’s test rush before the Thanksgiving break. Next week I have four tests in four days. Already I’ve bunkered down in my room with the books. Naturally, I will be requiring some escape this weekend to offset the insanity that will pile up around my desk.

I think it’s the stress that keeps me going though. I’m not sure how I’d handle lots of time on my hands. Perhaps, we’ll all find out next fall. *idea!* I could finally join some clubs etc.

On the same note, I decided this week to start attending a few of the infinite seminars, lectures, and sessions across campus and also to try and meet some new people.

Monday I sat in on the lecture by an emeritus professor regarding the current integration of religion and politics. He didn’t really point out anything I couldn’t already decipher, but he clearly labeled the types of politically active, religious individuals and how they respond to different contexts. I thought it was very interesting and worth my time.

Wednesday night I went to the Linguistics Society of Virginia Tech for a seminar on myths regarding the learning of languages. The professor had great commentary on the topic and her personal insight through everyday examples adamantly reinforced her case. Enjoyed that one too.

So despite going to two seminars, I still hadn’t really met anyone; I chatted socially with someone at the religion seminar, but nothing much. Thursday morning was the gym. Oh-so bright and early, again. There I ended up talking to the girl who monitors the free weights portion of McComas. We actually had a few things in common, like going to the same high school. Who knew? She graduated a year before me; I was never that familiar with that particular class of students, especially not nearly as familiar with them as I am with the current JFHS senior class. So we had a good chat about JF and VT and else.

With meager results I completed my goals for this week. In this case, comparing my meager results to the prior absence of all social activity is easily analogous to comparing apples and oranges. I feel amply refreshed after this week, in spite of the homework bearing down.

Oh crap. The homework’s bearing down…
